Sample questions from the Rules of the Road test
Three real questions, written the way the test writes them. Open the answer on each one to see why the right option is right and why the others are not. Start the test above for the rest.
Question 1
As a level one (G1) driver, you must be accompanied by:
- AA class G driver with 3 or less years of experience.
- BA class G2 driver with at least 1 year of experience.
- CA class G driver with more than 4 years experience.
- DA class G1 driver with 10 years experience.
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: C. A class G driver with more than 4 years experience.
The accompanying driver must hold a full Class G licence with at least four years of driving experience, have a blood alcohol level under 0.05, and sit in the front passenger seat. A G2 driver cannot accompany a G1 driver.
Question 2
How long do demerit points remain on your driver's record?
- A2 years.
- B60 days.
- C12 months.
- D6 months.
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: A. 2 years.
The two-year clock runs from the day the offence happened, not from your conviction date or the day you paid the fine. Points expire by themselves at the end of it, but for that whole period they sit on your record and stack with anything else you collect.
Question 3
You are behind a school bus when its upper red lights begin to flash. How far back must you stop?
- AAt least 5 metres.
- BAt least 10 metres.
- CAt least 30 metres.
- DAt least 20 metres.
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: D. At least 20 metres.
Coming up behind a school bus whose upper red lights are flashing, you have to be stopped 20 metres back, roughly four car lengths of clear space for children crossing. Stay there until the lights go dark or the bus pulls away. A first offence brings a heavy fine and six demerit points.
