Sample questions from the The Marathon test

Three real questions, written the way the test writes them. Open the answer on each one to see why the right option is right and why the others are not. Start the test above for the rest.

  1. Orange diamond sign showing a worker with a shovel

    Question 1

What does this orange sign tell you is ahead?

    • AConstruction to begin on the road ahead in 30 days.
    • BTraffic control official ahead.
    • CA survey crew taking measurements at the roadside ahead.
    • DRoad work ahead.
    Show the answer and explanation

    Answer: D. Road work ahead.

The orange diamond with a worker means a construction crew is on or near the road ahead. Slow to the posted construction speed, watch for workers and equipment on the pavement, and be ready for lane shifts or a traffic control person directing you.

  2. Question 2

If you accumulate 15 demerit points, your licence is suspended:

    • AAutomatically, for 30 days from the day you surrender your licence.
    • BOnly if the Ministry decides a suspension is warranted.
    • CFor 7 days, and then your points reset to zero.
    • DFor up to 6 months.
    Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. Automatically, for 30 days from the day you surrender your licence.

Fifteen points triggers an automatic 30-day suspension for a fully licensed driver, and those 30 days only begin once you hand the licence in. Hold on to it instead and the suspension can stretch to two years. Serve it out and your total resets to 7.

  3. Question 3

Who has the right-of-way if a traffic signal changes while a pedestrian is still in the street?

    • AMotorists coming from the pedestrian's right.
    • BMotorists coming from the pedestrian's left.
    • CMotorists making right turns.
    • DThe pedestrian.
    Show the answer and explanation

    Answer: D. The pedestrian.

A pedestrian who is already in the crosswalk keeps the right of way when the signal changes. Wait until they have reached the other side before you move off, no matter which direction you are travelling.
